IonianIonian mode is another name for the diatonic maj'or scale, which is the most well-known and used scale in Western music. It is one of the seven musical modes, and is characterized by a specific pattern of half and whole steps. In the diatonic scale, the steps are as follows: Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. If we start on C (a common starting point since it does not involve the use of black keys on a piano), the scale would look like this:C, D, E, F, G, A, B, CHere are the distances between the notes:
  • C to D: whole step
  • D to E: whole step
  • E to F: half step
  • F to G: whole step
  • G to A: whole step
  • A to B: whole step
  • B to C: half step
These distances between the notes give the Ionian (or major) scale its characteristic sound. You can also start this scale on any other note to create different Ionian scales. For example, a G Ionian scale would look like this:G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, GNote that F is changed to F# to maintain the same pattern of half and whole steps.
